WA Over 55's - 2011 Match Reports

WA vs ACT - Saturday, October 1, 2011

Motto: Enthusiasm

WA had a brilliant start to the tournament today. The first game was against ACT. In the first half WA was very patient and in control and were finally rewarded at the 22 minute mark when Jill Sheehan passed the ball across the circle, deflected by Lyn Tapper to Janese Mc Dougall who slammed it home. Just before half time ACT equalised through a penalty stroke.

Three minutes into the second half WA earned a penalty stroke which Catherine McFarlane converted to make it 2 to 1.

From then on WA took control of the game with Janese Mc Dougall converting 2 further field goals for a hat trick at the 53rd and 58th minute mark. This was followed by a short corner conversion by Betty Butterly. The final score was 5 - 1.

It was a great team effort by all. More wins to come. Watch this space!

Result: WA 5 - ACT 1
Goal scorers: Janese Mc Dougall 3, Betty Butterly 1, Catherine Mc Farlane 1

WA vs NSW - Sunday, October 2, 2011

Motto: Determination

A game dominated by work between the 25's. Opportunities lost but dogged defence paid off.

WA gained a point.

NEXT TIME!!!

Result: WA 0 - NSW 0

WA vs QLD - Monday, October 3, 2011

Motto:Unity

WA came out of the blocks in attacking mode.
Great team work led to numerous circle penetrations without success.
After a stirring address at half time from coach, Coleen suggesting "we find the goals", the team returned to the pitch after 1/2 time with renewed focus.
At the 10 minute mark Kerry Mather ran the ball along the base line and passed it to the 7 metre spot. Betty Butterly pounced on the ball and directed a shot at the goals. The ball rebounded off the goalies pads and was slotted home by Ricky Whelan for WA's first goal.
The team continued to attack.
An error in our defensive circle resulted in a Queensland short corner.
This corner was well defended by WA and resulted in a rapid turnover. Dale Keiley quickly passed the ball to Janese McDougall who gave a long ball down the field to Jill Sheehan, who outsmarted the goalie to hammer home WA's second goal, giving WA a 2-0 victory.

Result: WA 2 - QLD 0
Goal scorers: Rickey Wheelan, Jill Sheehan

WA vs VIC - Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Motto: Enthusiasm

In the first half WA penetrated the attacking circle on many occasions earning several penalty corners without a result.
Jill Sheehan tried various avenues to score a goal with a number of attempts going astray.
The coach gave everyone a rev up at half time and reminded us where the goals were.

After the break WA were immediately into attack and were rewarded with a penalty corner.
A team effort saw Jill finish it off.

WA made better use of the ball. They took control of the game with great passing around the back.
Earning another short corner Janese McDougall slotted home a second off a deflection.
The forwards were finding lots of space and a great pass by Dale Keiley saw Jill again convert.
Finally our penalty corner practice paid off with a fourth goal by Sue Gallinagh.

The end result of "Kick a Vic" day was 4-1 because the speed of our defenders on the corner battery was amazing as two defenders were sent to the half way line and the Vics scored their one and only goal.

As the tournament progresses WA 55's are getting better.

Bring on the finals!

Result: WA 4 - VIC 1

Goal scorers: Jill Sheehan 2, Sue Gallinagh 1, Janese McDougall 1

WA vs NT - Thursday, October 6, 2011

Motto: Life is not whether you win or lose: it's about win - win

This was an important game for the team. Holding first place, NSW had just beaten Queensland (1-0) and was ahead on points. However, the WA O' 55's had one game to go. Our objective was to be first at the end of the round games.

Early goals would be important. The team had not been successful in many first halves, starting slow. We needed to get on the board quickly and did so within the first ten minutes. After some clever build up on the right side a goal was scored by Janese McDougall.
Ricky Whelan did a lot of work in the striker line to set up plays and opportunities. Lynne Tapps also worked hard as a striker to create opportunities. A second goal was scored by Jill Sheehan as a result of a good team effort.
Kerry Mather showed fitness and versatility working through the mid line and forward line - having to follow players across the field and back.
Dale Keiley at midfield worked relentlessly to move the play forward. The result was a third goal by Jenny Rogers.

The second half was less productive for the team. But it gave the coach an opportunity to use a different system, moving players to different positions and rest some of the players for the first crossover game. Throughout , the defensive unit held fast. Maris Margetts, Marg Knapp and Catherine McFarlane kept all play out of the circle so that Nancy Churchill , our goalie, was, yet again touch less in the match.

Our next game is against Victoria in the first crossover game.

Result: WA 3 - NT 0

Goal scorers: Jill Sheehan, Jennifer Rogers, Janese McDougall

SemiFinal WA vs VIC - Friday, October 7, 2011

Motto: Cohesiveness

After finishing in first place the WA 55's played a crossover game against Victoria. Being 1st V 4th. We were off to a flying start with lots of penetrations into our circle which resulted in our first goal in the first 4 minutes from Jenny Rogers. Our defence in Maris and Macca were working hard to keep the Vics under control and with our dependable half backs in Jane Manning and Gail Anderson, managed to keep the pressure on and the ever reliable Betty Butterly slotted one in from a great pass from Jill from a long corner, score being 2-0 at half time.

After an inspirational talk from coach Coleen WA commenced the second half with enthusiasm and drive working consistently as a team but the Vic forwards were able to put one away past the WA team and scored their first goal. WA started into attack through their midfield and a pass to Jill Sheehan who linked up with Betty Butterly high in our attack took on the Vic defence with their one two combination with Betty scoring for WA again.

The Vics then penetrated once again through our defence scoring their 2nd goal. But in the true fighting spirit of WA with great team work by all, a short corner was awarded which saw a hit at the top of the circle by Janese with a fine touch by Jilly Sheehan to score their 4th gaol.

GRAND FINAL HERE WE COME !!!!

Result: WA 4 - VIC 2

Goal scorers: Jill Sheehan 1, Betty Butterly 2, Jenny Rogers 1
