WA Over 50's - 2007 Match Reports

WA vs VIC2 - Monday, October 1, 2007

A very good start with a long corner in the first minute. This set the pace and the early constant attack paying off with a goal in the 8th minute mark. A deflection by Adrian Gabriel giving the Ducks their first goal. Victoria came back quickly & scored on a short corner half way through the half. After this the Ducks stepped up the attack, moving the ball around well and pushed Vic back into their defensive 25. Steve Farrar came off after a hit on the hand and unfortunately was off for the rest of the game.1-1 at the end of the first half.

The second half started the same as the first with a W.A. long corner again setting the pace. This set them up for the short corner in the 6th minute and great shot from the top of the ‘D’ by our Vice Captain, Alan Chesney, to get their 2nd goal on the board. Captain, Maurice Giles did not want to be out done and also hit a winning shot from a short corner a minute later.

Our next goal came in the 11 minute with a big hit from the top of the ‘D’ by Ralph Untersteiner. This was from an attack set up from the half line.

Best player for the game was Maurice Giles as voted by the team. Unfortunately Steve Farrar will not continue in this championship due to a broken hand. He now slips into the role as team gopher, photographer and supporter.

Result: WA 4 - VIC2 1

WA vs WA Country - Tuesday, October 2, 2007

We traveled to Brisbane for this game with the first battle on the M1 trying to get through to Colmslie, just south of Brisbane. The game did not start as well as the previous day with WA Country attacking hard in the first 5 minutes and getting a penalty corner against and then another in the 15th minute when they scored the first goal. It took the ducks the rest of the half to compose themselves and reset the play to get a goal ( Maurice Giles ) in the last 5 minutes.

In the second half the ducks had not really settled in but to their credit they were able to score early in the 10th minute to take the lead. From here on both teams battled, to and fro with no result.

Best player for the game was Wayne Cutler. Well done.

Result: WA 2 - WAC 1

WA vs QLD2 - Thursday, October 4, 2007

Going into this the boys knew they would have a tough run against the Queensland Cyclones. QLD had also won their first two games and a win here would take a team to the top of the pool. The game flowed back and forth in the first half with only one penalty corner to each team with no result. The first goal came from a field play set up well by the half line, pass across by Paul Nicholson to Wayne Cutler who deflected the ball pass the keeper.

In the second half the ducks had some good runs into the ‘D’ get goals or at least penalty corners. We had two corners with no result. The Queenslanders were able to get three penalty corners in the last 4 minutes. Defense lead by Max Viner in goals was very good.

A very good win to take the team to the top of the pool.

The best player was Keith Gilbride with his outstanding efforts on the back line.

Result: WA 1 - QLD2 0
