WA Women's Service Awards 2023

During this year’s Masters Nationals in Perth, at the WA Women’s State Dinner on Monday 25 September, the following worthy people have been the recipients of this years the WA Women’s Masters Service Awards. The awards were kindly presented to the recipients by Laurie Packham:

Sandra Treloar

Sandra is a very well respected and dedicated representative nominated to receive the Award in recognition of Outstanding Contribution to Women’s Master’s hockey in Western Australia for 2023.

She has made significant contribution and addresses the criteria for master’s hockey within Western Australia as a player, administrator, leadership, coach, selector, umpire for 10+ years, (not necessarily consecutive years) at a State level, and at her Club and Association Metro and Country levels - Central Midlands Eastern Districts 1970-76, Roe District Association - Kulin Club 1976-1989, South Perth 1990-1993 and Peel Association 1993-2005 and at National Championships as a player, leadership, coach, umpire and selector.

WA National master’s hockey involvement:

Sandra has been involved in master’s hockey representing Western Australia for 10+ years from 1994 till 2023 as a player, coach, player/coach, leadership, umpire, and selector.

She began her involvement with WA master’s Hockey being selected in 1994 in the Over 45 team.

She has played in master’s hockey representing Western Australia for 12 years.

 

Sandra was a player WA National master’s hockey for 5 years:

1994 - 45+; 1995 - 45+; 1997 - 50+; 1998 - 50+ and 1999 – 50+

 

Sandra was an umpire WA National master’s hockey for 2 years - (as well as being a player):

2000 – 35+ and 1999 – 50+

 

Sandra was a coach WA National master’s hockey for 7 years: (4 years as a Player/Coach)

2000 - 35+; 2001 - 50+ (Ansett collapse – WA not able to attend, but trained the team up until we were not able to attend); 2002 - 50+; 2003 - 50+; 2004 - 55+; 2005 - 55+: and 2006 - 55+

 

Sandra has been a WA master’s selector for 5 years: -

2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and she came back into selecting in 2023, to help select the Over 45s teams.

 

Club Hockey and Country Week – Metro and Country Associations:

Sandra has been actively involved with playing, administrator, leadership, umpiring, coaching and selector for 45 years.

At Central Midlands 1962-1969; Eastern Districts 1970-1976; Roe Districts 1976-1989; South Perth (Now WASP) 1990-1993 and Peel Association 1993-2005.

Coach – Kulin hockey club - Roe Districts

Coach – Halls Head – Peel Association

Coach – Peel Association Country week teams – winning A Grade for the first time.

Coach – Roe District country week teams – many successes.

President - Roe District Association.

 

Other:

The over 55s WA women’s master’s hockey trophy is named after Sandra.

Sandra holds a Level B umpiring badge and a Level 2 Coaching Accreditation.

 

Suzanne Stoate

She is a very well respected and dedicated representative nominated to receive the Award in recognition of Outstanding Contribution to Women’s master’s hockey in Western Australia for 2023.

Suzanne has made significant contribution and addresses the criteria for master’s hockey within Western Australia as a player, administrator, and leadership person at a Western Australia masters state local / club level – WASPS Hockey club and at National master’s Championships and at an Australian level as a player and leadership person for at least 10years, (not necessarily consecutive years).

WA National master’s hockey involvement:

Suzanne began her involvement with WA master’s hockey being selected in the 2002 in the Over 35s team.

She has played in master’s hockey representing Western Australia for 12 years – 2003, 2004, 2005,2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017.

She has held a Leadership position in WA Over 50s team in 2017.

In 2023 Suzanne has been selected as a player in the Over 60s WA master’s team. This will be Suzanne’s 13th year playing for Western Australia.

 

Australian master’s involvement:

Suzanne has been selected in Australian master’s Trans-Tasman hockey teams in 2004, 2008, 2011, 2018, and a World Cup Australian team in 2018, achieving many successes.

In 2011 she was in the Leadership group as Co-Captain.

She was selected 4 other times in Australian teams but had to withdraw for personnel reasons.

 

Suzanne has been a WA women’s hockey master’s selector for 3 years (when she was not able to play)

2021, 2014 and 2013

 

Country Week Hockey:

Suzanne played country week hockey for Busselton for 4 years 1977-1980.

 

Club hockey:

Suzanne has been playing hockey for over 52 years, in WA country - Busselton association, overseas in London, and currently with WASP in the Perth Metro area. 

In 1978 she represented WA in the Under 16 team.

 

Mid-week master’s hockey:

Suzanne is currently playing mid-week master’s hockey for WASPs in Division 3.

She has been playing master’s hockey for over 20 years.

 

Club Official:

Suzanne is a longstanding Co-ordinator / Captain / Coach / Manager for over 16 years of the WASP masters women’s hockey teams.

Suzanne co-ordinated the inaugural WASP master’s team and with her persistent involvement, and her driving force was behind its on-field success - WASP team was promoted to the Rae Blunt Division 1, this also included an expansion of WASP masters hockey teams leading into a second and then a third team in the mid-week competition.

She was the recipient of the WASP club’s ‘Fallow’ Trophy in 2021 – for her contribution to the WASP’s masters’ women’s hockey teams.

Her dedication to the club teams is epitomised this year - she has played in Division 3 master’s team but has been the Team Manager for the 2s (with the weekly task of organizing the player list and logistics,) and when the fixtures did not clash, she managed the 2s on game day.

Suzanne alongside 2 other players have worked closely to ensure all 3 WASP master’s teams are able to field players each week, and to find players to assist with WASP’s weekend competition.

Suzanne has been a role model for up-and-coming masters’ hockey players to strive to play for their state.

She promotes and encourages WASPs players to nominate each year for the WA women’s master’s hockey teams.

She strives to play to the best of her ability for all - WASP club, WA state and Australian teams.

2024 Men's & Women's NOMINATIONS FOR WA STATE MASTER TEAMS OPEN

for players for 2024 Men’s and Women’s State Masters Teams.

Men's HA Masters Championships - Change of Dates

Hockey Australia Masters has confirmed changes to the dates of the Men's National Championships in Hobart in July 2024.

2024 Hockey Australia Men’s Masters Championships dates and venue have been reviewed and confirmed dates for Hobart, Tasmania in July will be as follows: 

Venue:  Tasmanian Hockey Centre, Hobart

Dates:   Friday 12 July until Saturday 27 July 2024 

Competitions will be conducted in two Tournaments to ensure shorter commitment dates for the 34-50 Men.

  • Tournament 2 34+ to 50+ Men:  Friday 12 July – Saturday 20 July 2024
  • Tournament 3 55+ to 65+ Men:  Tuesday 16 July* – Saturday 27 July 2024  (*There will be a staggered start to Tournament 3.  Teams will commence between 16 and 19 July).

                                  70/75+**   Men:   Sunday 14 July – Saturday 27 July 2024   **MA Men’s Masters Delegates have advised that no 80+ Men’s competition will go ahead in 2024.

 The HA Women’s Masters Championships, Tournament 1, remains Friday 28 June – Saturday 6 July 2024 in Sydney, NSW.

WA Women's Masters Teams for 2024 Announced

Thank you to all the players who have nominated for this year’s WA master’s teams to compete in the Nationals in Sydney in June/July 2024. Also, a big thank you for all the selectors and OFT for your commitment and efforts getting the teams selected. We appreciate everything you do for Masters.

Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get sufficient nominations for a WA O45s or O65s teams. However, we have worked closely together with the coaches and selection panels to select as many O45s and O65s players into other WA teams.

For those players who missed out on selections, if you are still interested to compete in this year’s Nationals, we are happy to place you on the WA Pick Up list, for you to be selected in other State teams. Australian Masters Service Award 2023

During the Welcoming Ceremony at the recent Australian Masters Championships in Perth on Wednesday 27 September, Nicola Ogden was presented with the Australian Masters Service Award for recognition of significant, outstanding, and sustained contribution to Australian Masters hockey at the national or international level underpinned by the ‘One Masters’ tenets of participation, performance, passion, and partnerships.

Nicola has also made significant contribution to master’s Hockey within Western Australia as a player, manager, and official person at a Western Australian master’s local and at her Club level at Melville City Hockey Club.

Nicola has been playing hockey for over 48 years for Harlequin Wanneroo, Towns-Northam, Murdoch University and Melville City Hockey clubs. 

Nicola has played mid-week master’s Hockey for Melville City master’s hockey club, being involved in many successful teams.

Nicola over her hockey career has been involved in coaching junior and senior hockey teams, having some success.

 

Encouragement of New master’s players

Nicola does a lot of behind the scenes work with organizing club masters’ teams, supporting ‘new’ master’s Players, and anything that needs to be done to support master’s hockey at a club level but also for master’s hockey in Western Australia, and at National master’s level.

WA Over 40's - 2015 Match Reports

 


WA vs QLD - Thursday, September 24, 2015


We came out hard and played to our strengths, surprising the opposition with intensity and team work. 

First blood was shed by Sads who copped a hit to an eye - but she came out fighting again after a quick patch up. 

Went one nil down toward the end of the first half with a sneaky intercept and break away into goal. 

Missed a couple of our own short corners by the slimmest of margins, with one hitting the post and another rolling over the backline after trying a variation to the left. 

Holding structure we continued to apply pressure in the second half, but took another hit with the goalie out of her box, saving three flick attempts before it finally got past and into the net with ten minutes to go. 

Hard, well fought first game! 

Result: WA 0 - QLD 2 


WA vs NSW - Friday, September 25, 2015


After an in depth de-brief last night at The Retreat, the team was focused on splitting the pitch and playing a perfected press against NSW. 

Although we got off to a slower start in today's game, we were technically better and using our hockey brains to deny the opposition possession of the ball. 

Still scoreless at half time, coach Nashi pulled us up on staying positive and trusting ourselves to do the job. 

The second half had more flow and intensity with patches of precision passing and momentum going forward. 

Our goal came from the fallout of a short corner with a beautiful cross pass from Scotty to Smash who deflected it in off the right post. 

A dramatic finish saw the team withstand 3 short corners in the final seconds and after the siren to keep NSW scoreless. 

Phew! First win feels good.

WA vs ACT - Saturday, September 26, 2015


Going into this game with confidence on the back of our last win, we hit the ground running, with our best start for the tournament so far. 

We were into the attacking circle within minutes hungry to strike early. 

Our first goal off a short corner, went to Sads who deflected a beautiful hit from Scotty at the left post after executing the push out as well – noooice! 

Though unable to match our work rate, ACT still challenged our defenders to get into position from time to time, with some break aways, and strong hitting and trapping. 

Our second goal, also came in the first half, after some great passing and build up from the back, through the midfield and to the front with Rocket in perfect position to slot it in. 

Several more passages of play like this continued in the second half, with more chances, but with no result. 
But we were more than happy with our process and a 2-0 win. 

One more match in the round robin to go against the VICS after a well-earned rest day tomorrow.

WA vs VIC - Monday, September 28, 2015


It was a glorious Queensland sunny afternoon with no sign of the promised “light storm” to break the searing 27 degree heat. Coming off the back of a delightful rest day in Byron Bay the team took to the field knowing that a win would put them in a good position at the end of the first round of the competition. Unfortunately the relaxation appeared to continue for the first 20 minutes of the game and we found ourselves 1 nil down to a Victorian short corner, 8 minutes into the first half. 

After being drawn into Victoria’s pattern of play, we finally started to play our own game, with some great patterns of play developing and with much more of the short sharp hockey we’d been playing in previous games. 

Making better opportunities in the second half, we spent more time on the offensive and Zappa capitalised deflecting a good ball into the D, past the Victorian keeper at 50 minutes. It was difficult to determine who would come out on top. Just as everyone appeared to be thinking the game would end at 1-1, we won a short corner. Jodie George struck at goal whistling the ball through the keeper’s legs with 2 seconds to go. A happy 40s team came off the field knowing that the win now sets up a real opportunity for the gold medal.

WA vs QLD - Tuesday, September 29, 2015


Go to brissy they said, it'll be sunny they said. A 1.5 hr delay due to lightning and hail quickly proved that theory wrong!!! We would like a refund. 

Great out of the blocks this game, fired up to beat the only team that had taken points off us thus far (and we were better). 
A broken knuckle by brave striker Julie-Ann at the 3min mark saw us a man down but with a PCA early (thanks for taking it for the team Jewels). 

We kept our structure and game plan, but unfortunately turned the ball over numerous times to put the defenders under pressure, eventually resulting in a PCA goal for QLD mid way through the first half. 

The second half was quite evenly matched and there were some nice passages of play, but QLD pounced on a defensive fumble that saw them 2 nil up. 

Desperate to catch up, we put the pressure on resulting in striker Ally Thunder diving hard for a lovely deflection goal off the right post (and later another green card) to finish the game 2-1 down. 

All in all, we came home feeling as dark as the storm, hoping our mood passes by just as quickly.

WA vs NSW - Wednesday, September 30, 2015


With the game delayed to 4.45pm, following yesterday’s late finish after storms, we relished our sleep in and morning preparation with a twist (blind folded trust walk), in the lead up to another big match against NSW. 

Passing the half way mark of the tournament, now is the time when injuries, soreness, tiredness and home sickness all start to take their toll, in conjunction with each match becoming more results focused. 

We took to the pitch with fire in our bellies after yesterday’s loss and were on a mission to make amends against New South and to stay in contention for Gold. 

We pressured the NSW defence with a great forward press and held structure at the back to make their forwards work hard to win the ball. 

At the 16 minute mark, New South slotted a field goal from a deep play to the baseline and pass back to centre and into the net. 

Holding composure we fought back hard and maintained our dominance – then scored just before the half time whistle with Karen Richards slipping a sweet jink pass to Nyree Brown, who turned on her heels cutting up the defence, to get a shot away and into the back of the net. 

1-1 at half time we knew we could get the desired result if we kept up our work rate and attempted to do everything that was asked of us. 

Although we didn’t take the win today, we did win our battles and once again, fought to the very end to finish with a draw.

WA vs ACT - Thursday, October 1, 2015


Despite playing in the hottest part of the day – we took our A game into this match and used opportunity to get on top of ACT early – capitalizing with well executed goals, which came from focusing on the process to build up several opportunities and pinging each one into the back of the net like seasoned pros. 
We were superb and 5-0 up at half time. 

With more text book hockey, ACT flagging in the heat, and most of our opportunities coming together at last, we continued our domination, showing no mercy with another 4 goals in the second half. 

A true team effort was acknowledged with six different goal scorers for the match and Rocco shouted the bar after a hat trick of field goals. 

Result: WA 9 - ACT 0


WA vs VIC - Saturday, October 3, 2015


With NSW on equal points and goal difference at the end of the last round – we needed a final win against the Vics and then for QLD to remain undefeated in the following match against New South – so that we could bring home the silver medal. 

With a must win mentality, the game started with massive intensity and a tonne of nervous energy. After the first 15 minutes we began to settle and suddenly we built up the play to keep it in our attacking half – and scored a few short corners that brought results, including a lovely straight hit off a short corner from Jodie George and a deflection from Tarsh (Trash) – her first goal for the tournament. 
The Vics goalie was in shock as we walked off the pitch at half time with a comfortable 3-0 lead. 

Though we were aware that the Vickers would not stop – we were often caught flat footed in the second half and started to force the ball more, in desperation, knowing how important the outcome of this game was. The Vics put one past the keeper off a short corner at the 39 minute mark and again with just 4 mins to go until the final whistle. 

Digging deep we held on and bagged the win with a 3-2 final score line. 

Thankfully QLD also defeated NSW in the final 40s round robin match – so we then secured the SILVER outright. 

Result: WA 3 - VIC 2  

WA WON SILVER!!
