WA Over 45's - 2009 Match Reports

WA vs ACT - Friday, October 2, 2009

Friday Oct 2 WA Womens 45s v ACT WA defeated ACT 1-0 The ideal way to start the 2009 tournament - the first WA team to play registered the first win.
The game started at a rapid pace with the goal scored midway through the first half, initiated by a back pass from the left half Leeanne within the attacking 25 to Ruly.
The planets then aligned and the seas parted allowing a rocket-like pass to right wing Be (Elsebe) who had sprinted through the masses to arrive at the far post at exactly the right time to nonchalantly deflect the ball into the top corner of the goal.

The midfield players seemed to have a lot of space to play in and the ball was passed well between them and our backs changing the direction of play to allow our running forwards many attacking breaks, but unfortunately there were no more goals converted.

Frenchy (the goalie) did not touch the ball in the second half and Hoggers made a play for Best on Ground, falling over her own feet in the middle of the pitch with no-one around her.
She appears intent on self harm after deflecting a ball into her own nose during training the day before and now sporting a bandage on the bridge of her nose.

All players and staff worked together well, including running the interchanges smoothly to get the tournament off to a great start.

Result: WA 1 - ACT 0

Goal scorers: Elsebe
Best player as nominated by WA: Helen Gandy
Best player as nominated by Tech Bench: Helen Rule
Coach's Award: Jenny Hogg

WA vs SA - Saturday, October 3, 2009

We got off to a flying start with Kate and Ritzy combining well on the right side to penetrate deep into our attacking zone.
The two goals were scored midway through the first half with Del Jack lifting the ball past the goalie and then shortly afterwards Vicki Re finishing off a series of short passes and pressure shots back at the goalie to put us two up.

Good strong defence from the forwards and penetrating cross passes from the backs saw us dominate the game but unfortunately we were unable to add to the score in the second half.

Result: WA 2 - SA 0

Goal scorers: Del Jack, Vicki Re
Best player as nominated by WA: Leeanne Purdom
Best player as nominated by Tech Bench: Elsebe Kirkness
Coach's Award: Del Jack for getting the entire team into the ice baths.

WA vs VIC - Sunday, October 4, 2009

We (WA) held them early but their (VIC) constant movement of players led to some headaches for our backs.
It was a tough game with plenty of body on body contact as both teams fought hard for the ball.
The backline settled more in the second half but had difficulty getting the ball through the wall of Victorian players into our forward line.

Result: WA 0 - VIC 2

Best player as nominated by WA: Marie Hadet
Coach's Award: Catherine Lewis

WA vs NSW - Monday, October 5, 2009

Hard fought 1-1 draw.

WA forwards pressured NSW from the word go and with strong defensive work the score was 0-0 at half time.

Second half was where all the action was including a perfectly aimed quick free hit by Catherine through to Be inside the circle on the left resulting in another spectacular deflection into the top of the net for Be’s 2nd tournament goal.

NSW came back to square one up. Some great intercepts by Kate created havoc for NSW defenders and a pass over to the right of circle almost got Be the winner. Team voted Kate Main as best player and Vickie Re received coach’s award

Result: WA 1 - NSW 1

Goal scorers: Be
Best player as nominated by WA: Kate Main
Coach's award: Vicki Re

WA vs NT - Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Our legs were feeling fresher after a day off and we needed them as it was another fast game.
We once again found space and Jenny Hogg made use of that space with a number of blistering runs from the backline into attack.

Kate Main scored with a lifted shot midway through the first half while we seemed to be in control of the game, keeping the ball wide and passing around the opposition.

The second half started with more attack from the NT girls and the backline seemed under siege for the first ten minutes but settled, held fast and didn’t panic.
We then took control back and finally converted a short corner in the second half when Be pounced on a ball that rebounded off the goalie.
Vicki Re finished off a quick breakaway with our third goal less than two minutes later.

Result: WA 3 - NT 0

Goal scorers: Kate Main, Vicki Re, Elsebe Kirkness
Best player as nominated by WA: Jenny Hogg
Coach's Award: Vicki Re

WA vs QLD - Thursday, October 8, 2009

The score line does not accurately reflect the balance of the game.
The first half was spent mainly in our defensive half but our backs marked closely and held strong.
The majority of the second half however was spent in our attack with us having a lot more circle penetrations than Queensland but unfortunately we were unable to score.
We were awarded a penalty stroke but their goalie made the save.

Del and Be both earned green cards. Be for an alleged push in the back and Del for lifting the stick way over her head (pointing to the sky) and jumping up to stop an overhead ball from Queensland.
She still seemed prepared to argue the point – don’t think so Del!!!

Helen Rule was voted Best Player by the team and earned the largest fine of the tour for forgetting her skirt and having to borrow one from the 50s. Claire Skoss earned the Coach’s Award.

Result: WA 0 - QLD 2

Best player as nominated by WA: Helen Rule
Coach's Award: Claire Skoss
