WA vs NT - Friday, October 1, 2010

WA started the game with determination and vigor and were rewarded at the 3 minute mark when Kaye McGlew scored a field goal from the left closely followed by a penalty corner conversion by Janese McDougall 8 minutes later.
The West were on fire. The goal frenzy continued with Betty Butterly scoring a field goal followed closely by the right half Gail Anderson overlapping into the circle and striking the ball sweetly past the goal keeper.
The team continued to attack and earnt another penalty corner which resulted in Lorraine Carnachan (alias Karen Allen) scoring the fifth goal for WA.

After half time the backs and midfield combined with the forwards and moved the ball back around and created another opportunity for Kaye McGlew to score her second goal for the match. The game ended with WA having a convincing 6 nil win.

A great start for the 55's women's vets team at the 2010 Australian Women's Veterans Hockey Championships.

WA vs QLD - Saturday, October 2, 2010

A game of missed oportunities. An excellent team effort with a lot of leading, communicating and being there for each other but it did not show on the score board.
A lapse in the dying minutes saw Queensland score against the play.
The team lifted but the technicalities of raised balls and sticks denied us salvaging a draw.
We are keen to show we can take the next step and make the conversions. WATCH THIS SPACE!

Result: WA 0 - QLD 1

WA vs VIC - Sunday, October 3, 2010

The team came out ready to avenge itself for the 1-0 loss to Queensland yesterday. The enthusiasm was high and everyone was committed to continuing to improve our communication.
We had played well during the Queensland game with a disappointing result. Everyone was determined to achieve a different outcome against Victoria.

The game started with WA controlling the play.
The first goal of the game involved the team carrying the ball down on the right and sending a strong shot across the circle. Kaye was behind the goalie, took the pass, and rammed it home.

The second goal of the half was a field goal by JR who carried the ball left and made a great hit to goal.
Betty added a third after Dale took a free hit quickly with a one pass to herself, pushing the ball to Betty who was deep on the right just inside the circle. Betty scored a terrific goal from a tight angle right behind the goalie.
WA ended the half 3-0.

The strategy for the second half was to keep up the great communications, fine passing and teamwork as well as continue to keep up the tempo of the game.
Kaye started the second with a goal, just like the first half. Dale was the key, driving and directing the play.
Her shot hit a lying down goalie, and Kaye scooped the ball up and over for her second of the game.
Sue got the fifth goal, with nice bent knees, from a sideline shot from Janese. Sue deflected the shot right into the goal for a resounding 5-0 win.

The third round ended with WA O55’s second on the ladder by one point and with a resounding +10 goal average (next team was +2 QLD).

Result: WA 5 - VIC 0

WA vs ACT - Tuesday, October 5, 2010

On Tuesday 5th October, the WA 55’s defeated the ACT 3:1 after a hard fought game.

The game commenced at 12.30pm with Canberra turning on the weather with the warmest day so far in the tournament. Great team work contributed to the win with the first WA goal being scored from an excellent pass from the fullback line through the midfield to the right striker, who sent it across the face of the goals to be beautifully finished off by Jenny.

WA’s second goal was scored by Karen following some fine team build up through the right wing, and the third goal resulted from a turnover in deep defence, being picked up by Janese, who capitalised on the opportunity.

ACT scored their only goal from a penalty corner just before half time.

There were periods of good team play in the second half, however, WA were unable to penetrate the ACT backline.
The three points from this win has helped to consolidate our place in second position. Goal scorers: Jenny Rogers, Karen Allen, Janese McDougall

Result: WA 3 - ACT 1
Goal scorers: Jenny Rogers, Karen Allen, Janese McDougall

WA vs NSW - Wednesday, October 6, 2010

This was the last game of the round before the finals. If we (WA) won we would end up on top of the ladder and play the 4th team in the cross over semi-finals on Friday. WA and NSW have always had tough encounters. WHAT WOULD THE RESULT BE!

WA lead from the start putting pressure on the NSW defence. We took control of the ball and moved it back around creating many opportuntities. Finally at the 27th minute we were awarded a penalty stroke which Catherine McFarlane converted by placing the ball cleanly into the right hand side of the goals.

Into the second half and WA immediately scored by moving the ball quickly and effectively into the cirlce where Kaye McGlew, positioned directly in front of the goals, stopped the ball and without hesitation, hit it passed the goalie.

There was no further score for the rest of the game but WA continued to press, ably directed by Nancy Churchill in the goals who stayed focussed throughout and made many influentical saves.

SEMI FINALS HERE WE COME !!!!

Result: WA 2 - NSW 0
Goal scorers: Catherine McFarlane, Kaye McGlew

Semifinal - WA vs ACT - Friday, October 8, 2010

As first placed team, the O55’s played today against ACT (4th). Since this was the first play-off game, the team was excited and nervous, hoping to score early. The team commitments for the day were continued communications, support, working the ball as a team, and playing our game.

The first 15 minutes the team showed its nervousness against an ACT team that needed to win. However, things soon settled down. The first major play started with Janese square to Gale who was wide on the right. Gail carried the ball and then made a terrific deep pass just inside the circle on the baseline where JR worked really hard to get the ball, then passed it back to Karen who squared it to Betty where she finished it off. Looked like beautiful play and was a confidence builder. We then got into our game with many good plays from the side into the circle. We were able to penetrate every ACT defensive strategy used. ACT’s one first half corner did not even result in a shot due to the fast running of Jane and Janese. Defence was solid throughout with Macca, Maris, Gail, Lyn, and Jane keeping the ball out of the defensive circle for most of the game.

The second half showed the team playing with more stability and confidence. Repeated activity in the offensive circle finally resulted in a stroke. Dale took the shot and made a clean score on the ACT goalie. 2-0. The team continued the pressure on ACT and demonstrated some beautiful work, especially the transfers and the communication.
Final score 2-0. On to the Grand Final!

Result: WA 2 - ACT 0
Goal scorers: Betty Butterly, Dale Keiley

WA THE GOLD MEDALISTS 55 WOMENS VETS 2010

Winners are Grinners!!!!!

WA went into the grand final as favourites after a very successful tournament over the past week in Canberra. We played the Vics.
From the outset WA was dominant and in control playing the ball around the back through the midfield and on to the strikers who worked very hard making many effective leads. The team was rewarded at the 8 minute mark with a goal when Sue received the ball on top of the cicle from the right and after the first attempt got the rebound and slotted the ball past the goalie into the right corner. WA was 1 goal up.
The second goal came from a short corner conversion where Janese hit a mighty powerful(not)shot past the goalie into the left corner.
WA went to the break 2 nil up.

Shortly after half time Betty received a ball from the right and cracked it into the goals.
Although WA 55's could sense victory their determination continued and were well and truly on their way to winning the gold medal when Karen batted a rising ball swiftly past the goalie for their 4th goal. The final whistle sounded and WA were the champion team of the 55's.

After the team was presented with their gold medals, Jane Manning was announced 'Best On Ground' for the grand final. Congratulations Jane - fantastic effort.
