WA Over 60's - 2009 Match Reports

WA vs NSW - Friday, October 2, 2009

WA had a very nervous beginning, the game was our first official run together. We played at 6.00 p.m. and the weather was very chilly.

NSW scored first but WA settled as the nerves settled.
WA’s goal was scored by the left wing who was on the post and converted a very clever pass into the circle.
Both teams then kept each other from scoring with some very tight defence work.

The 60’s would like to thank our many supporters who braved the very cold conditions to cheer us on with some very inspiring singing.

Result: WA 1 – NSW 1

Goal scorers (WA): Rosa Garner
Best Player (WA): Shirley Howard

WA vs VIC - Saturday, October 3, 2009

Today we played the Vics at 4.15 p.m, not quite as cold as the previous game but cold enough!

We conceded 4 goals in the first half of the game (three penalty corners) which saw us 4 – 1 down at half time.
Shirley Howard scored our goal midway through the first half.

Our second half was much steadier, the girls working hard against a younger and more experienced team.
Nancy Churchill our Goal Keeper made some very impressive saves and only one more goal was scored against us (penalty corner).

We are looking forward to our next meeting with this team as we feel it will be a much closer game.

Result: WA 1 – VIC 5

Goal scorer: Shirley Howard
Best Players: Kerry Koltasz, Nancy Churchill

WA vs QLD - Sunday, October 4, 2009

Today we played the Qld at 4.15 pm on ground number 3 which was not quite as bouncy as the other two grounds which suited our style.

We conceded another early goal (short corner) but settled.
The team combinations started to work better, we gained confidence in each other resulting in several good scoring opportunities.
We scored our goal late in the first half, Kerry Hood accepted a pass from Vicki True and drove it past the keeper to make the score 1-1.

In the second half, after a few positional changes, the team settled down to play some really good hockey, creating several very good chances that we should have scored from but we shot wide or miss-trapped.
Unfortunately the final score remained 1 – 1.

All players played well and it was not possible to single out a best player in this terrific team effort.

Result: WA 1 – Qld 1

Goal scorer: Kerry Hood
Best Player: WA Team effort.

WA vs NSW - Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Today we played the NSW at 11 am on ground number 2. It was very cold and miserable and the rain was so cold it became sleet. Some players even tried to claim that it was snow.

Although the team was not combining well in the first half we managed to get to the break with the score line at 0-0.
Nancy our goalkeeper was outstanding during this period.
Although we have several opportunities to score, our trapping let us down at the vital moment.

The players battled out the second half but as the game progressed Queensland was more consistent and eventually scored from a penalty corner to go 1-0 up.

Queensland scored a very good field goal to seal the match and run out winners 2-0.

A disappointing result for WA but we didn’t play well on the day.

Result: WA 0 - QLD 2

Best Players: Nancy Churchill , Shirley Howard, Vicki True
